God it's been a while; like... nearly a year since I did a journal on dA.
UPDATE:So I guess for those who don't know, I've spent the last year living and working in Canada with the lovely ~
Antilamonn. It's been a hell of an experience, and a total culture shock, coming from a little island at the bottom of the Pacific, coming to the big North America.
Learning things like how to traverse the Metro system, despite never having been underground before, and then exploring 4 storey high Shopping centers, only to find out that I'm still underground. Dealing with the foreign language barrier, fighting heat waves and 2 months later, snow storms; driving on the wrong side of the road, discovering god does exist and his name is actually Poutine, and discovering that McDonalds Cheeseburgers still taste better back home.
From selling fake perfume out the back of a car, or Halloween merchandise out of a storage container depot, to selling air conditioning insurance across Canada; I've met a lot of cool and diverse people, and I've lost count of the times I've tried to explain that NewZealand is that island
next to, but
not part of Australia, nor Europe, nor South America, nor Asia or Australia (I need to say it two times because it seemed to pop up a lot).
It's been a really fun year, though it's starting to draw to a close with my VISA expiring next month; which means I'll be heading back home, at l;east until I've gotten myself residency and can stay up there permanentlyyy.
I guess yeah; if I needed to justify having a relatively silent year on dA; it's 'cos I've been doing things abroad
OTHER STUFFIn the meantime, I've created a blog. Whatever I don't post on dA, I post there; more frequently and hastily. I'll try updating it with sketches or WIPs or something, maybe, possibly in the future;
Soyeah,
BLOG IS HEREOhyeah, bytheway, ALSO: Getting married next month. lol (:
it's also the same reason i've been innactive here the last... 5ish months. i totally understand where you're coming from.
is it hard to apply for residency over there? i guess it would be easier because you're getting married to someone there. i can't figure out the visa system. >__<
As for the residency thing;; it sorta varies from place to place. Over the last year I've talked to a bunch of people who immigrated here, and their experiences getting in took anywhere between 1-5 years. (COMMON TREND: THE MORE OFFICIALS YOU PAY, THE FASTER THE PROCESS GOES.)
Soyeah, I think coming from the Australasia-area is a bit of a plus, so while it's not especially hard, the processing time is just long. With the marriage thing though, I know it puts you into a different waiting line, which cuts the time from (eg: 42 months down to just 10.)
Then again, that's Canada, and for The States, their system is no doubt, a little different.
Thoughh; if you're serious about getting something started, a good foot-in-the-door is to apply for a Working Holiday Visa. I've been on one for the last 12 months, and it's sort of like the easier way to get a temporary VISA (Since a lot of them work as an inter-country exchange;; eg: 5000 Australians get to go to the USA, and 5000 USA's get to go Australia for a year).
It only took 2 months for them to process mine, and cost $250 for the year, so it was really easy for me.
It'd give you 12 months living and working in the US with your man, and so it's really good for testing the waters -> getting a life started between you guys. It kinda gives you a better feel for the country, and plus on tempVISAs, you seem to meet a lot of people in your situation/who have been in your situation, and they explain how to beat the system from the inside, which is always easier (:.
Note me if you want any help figuring out sites or whatever, since I know what it's like to have to try and navigate through them lol.
hehe, yes, i went over to meet a guy (+ a heap of other friends we both know!). stalk my fb pics if you haven't already. it's easy to tell which two we are ;D
The place I originally got all my infos was the Canadian Embasy back at home, so just took a trip down to the city one day and asked them what they had in terms of VISA information, and they gave me a couple of flyers which all had links to websites. Having it in black and white made it a bit easier I think though, since the sites have information scattered all around; but they seem to be a bit more direct and to the point when it's on paper.
That being said;; Aus is a little bigger then New Zealand is, so while a trip to the capital for me was just a little day trip; it might be a bit more difficult for you. I'm looking through the USEmbasy site in Australia, and apart from the big one in Canberra, you might have a bunch of Consular Offices scattered around the country that you could go visit, or call up. It should be pretty easy to call and ask if you can talk to someone, or have them send information about working visas or exchange programs; Dunno which territory you're in, so check through this thingg: [link]
I'm just browsing through that site as I write this, and there's a decent amount of information about VISAs; So it's defiantly worth having a read if you haven't already checked them out. At the least, it kinda just gives you an impression of what sorta stuff you'd need to prepare (information wise) for applying for any kind of VISa Programme.
I guess the equivalent ti what I did is their Non-immigrant visa: [link] ; though theirs seem to be a little more specific and they've got little sections corresponding with different work fields and whatnot. If you can't find one that matches you at the moment, again, giving them a call and asking or explaining your situation could help them match you to something, or explore options which aren't on the site;
Failing all that, I've seen plenty of "HEY GET A US GREEN CARD" adverts on the internet haha.
Butyeah, check your embassy out, ask them about International exchanges/temporary work visas/working holiday programs and see what they say. The guy I talked to when I first asked about stuff was not helpful at all, but he gave me a link to a site, I contacted someone on the site, and two months later I was on my way to Canada (:.
IS HE THE ONE IN THE BLUE HAT? haha yeah I remember when you uploaded a bunch of those!; you guys are cuuttte; Did you like the snow? Cos I know it was weird for me going from 20 years of dry, snowless, 2Degree winters to suddenly 3 feet of snow and -40 degree winters haha
YEAH THATS HIM. and us. oh boy. I LOVE THE SNOW. aussie weather is horrible. weee.
CONGRATS again on getting married. you guys are so so so so cute <3
